Dear Parishioners of St. James:
Praised be Jesus Christ our newborn king!
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that, “A man and a woman united in marriage, together with their children, form a family. This institution is prior to any recognition by public authority, which has an obligation to recognize it. It should be considered the normal reference point by which the different forms of family relationship are to be evaluated” (CCC 2202).
The family is a divine institution. Each of its members has rights and obligations toward the others so that each might learn how to love in the midst of society. Christian families form a “domestic church” because of their faith, hope and charity. They must be an image of the Most Holy Trinity as they are a communion of persons sharing life and love with God. Christian families are called to daily prayer in the home and the worship of the living God in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on Sundays and holy days (cf. CCC 2205).
Families also have the privilege and sacred responsibility of evangelizing each other in the true faith. Through mutual encouragement and example each family member is to seek holiness and thereby inspire others to follow Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Modeled after the Holy Family, Christians seek to imitate the examples of the relationships between Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
Families: become who you are! The Lord Jesus sanctified family life by His own participation in a human family. As God Himself, Jesus showed how to live in His grace in the day to day circumstances of family life by being present and obedient to His mother and foster father for many years before His public mission. May our Lord Jesus strengthen our families to be sources of love and holiness by His grace.
God bless you,
