With the change of pastors, I am thinking of St. Paul’s farewell in Acts 20. His farewell is emotional and, it seems, difficult for him.
Our farewells are perhaps not as dramatic, but I venture to say just as heartfelt and perhaps difficult. I also think the older we get, the harder change is.
Like St. Paul, farewells and the resulting change casts us into the unknown. We are asking ourselves what the new pastor will be like. And I suspect he is asking himself what St. James will be like. I also suspect Father Geary is asking himself what it will be like in Sandwich, and they are wondering about him.
As much as I imagine he loved his old parish, Father Mulcahey will find as he steps into the unknown for him of St. James, that without being too prideful he will find himself blessed to be here with us. We pray that Father Geary will also be happy in Sandwich.
All said and done, no matter what JESUS STAYS!
