Fr. Geary’s Letter for 7-9-23

Dear Parishioners of St. James:

                  Praised be Jesus Christ!

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (“CCC”) teaches that in preparation for worthy reception of the Most Holy Eucharist, the faithful’s “bodily demeanor (gestures, clothing) ought to convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest” (CCC, 1387). Actions speak louder than words. How we comport ourselves reflects our belief that Jesus Christ is truly present among us.

Our clothing shows respect for ourselves and for persons who are in our presence. Our clothes speak about what type of occasion we are enjoying and respectfully cover our  bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. When we come to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on the Lord’s Day, we should wear our “Sunday best.” St. Teresa of Calcutta often said, “Do something beautiful for God.”

As priests of the New Covenant, we enter into the sacred mysteries in Holy Mass. May we be properly vested in clothing befitting our dignity. Christ becomes our guest in the temple of our bodies. May we convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of the moment.

God bless you,

Fr. Geary
