Dear Parishioners of St. James:
Praised be Jesus Christ!
“What should we do?” This question was directed to St. John the Baptist by three different groups of people in today’s Gospel. What a humble question! They were open to the Holy Spirit by asking such a question to St. John. The people who listened to St. John were willing to follow his direction in order to be found pleasing the Lord.
St. John gave specific instructions relative to the different occupations of the groups who approached him. God wants us to be honest in our work. The Lord gives each of us direction in our dealings with others. For example, if you deal with money, do not steal. If you are in customer service, be friendly. If you are a police officer, be fair and peaceable. If you have more of this world’s goods, share with those in need, etc. God is very interested in our occupations. He wants us to be virtuous in our jobs as expressions of our faith.
How are you acting in your job? Advent is a time to examine how we treat others so that we may receive the same treatment from the Lord at His second coming. Will the Lord find you honest when He returns?
God bless you,
Fr. Geary
