We continue our reflections on the Nicene Creed that we recite almost every Sunday and Holyday. Every word and phrase was put there for a reason after much prayer and animated discussion.
I believe in God the Father ALMIGHTY CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH AND OF ALL THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE.
God is the almighty Father over all. He is more powerful than any earthly power — even those who think themselves greater than God. Lord of lords and King of kings. He is a loving father and not a tyrant.
He is the creator of all things. We might take that for granted and say “Of course. Obvious” Not obvious to some cultures. I think Hindus believe that creation is the product of a battle between two gods. Creation flowed from the wounds of the loser. It’s something like that if I remember correctly. — a product of violence.
The Book of Genesis gives two accounts of a loving God who creates all that is seen and unseen as the first communication of Himself and his love for us even before the Bible itself. A priest friend calls creation the first book of God’s revelation. I would add that we need to take care of this precious gift.
In a word: God is the sovereign creator of all things. He is the one and only true Creator, and everything ultimately belongs to Him2. As the uncreated and eternal being, He is the source and sustainer of everything that exists.
