We continue to share the concern that our children are being formed in our Catholic Faith as the bedrock of their lives. They need a solid and firm faith in Jesus and His Church in this world that is full of anti-values contrary to the lifestyle Jesus and His Church. Again, we have to insist that parents are the first teachers of the faith to their children. Religious education classes assist in this parental responsibility. A few hours a year, however, aren’t enough. I would hope and trust that parents are so passionate about their faith that they share this concern that the most precious thing they can offer their children is a strong and solid well-informed faith.
Spend time reviewing and reviewing again the last lesson presented in their religious education class. Perhaps read from books that have religious themes about the Saints, prayer, the Sacraments at the child’s level. Pray at home. It goes without saying attend Sunday Mass. Have some religious art at home.
Religious education is for more than preparing for First Communion or Confirmation, as important as that is. These sacraments are not an end in themselves, but rather important steps in a life journey of faith. Religious education should continue after the celebrations of these sacraments.
Nor are they simply social or cultural events. I remember having an irate mother upset that her child was deemed as not yet sufficiently prepared for First Communion and would have to put it off until the next year. “But the party is already planned” she complained. What’s wrong with that picture?

Seguimos compartiendo la preocupación de que nuestros hijos estén siendo formados en nuestra fe católica como la base de sus vidas. Necesitan una fe sólida y firme en Jesús y en su Iglesia en este mundo que está lleno de antivalores contrarios al estilo de vida que Jesús y su Iglesia presentan. Una vez más, tenemos que insistir en que los padres son los primeros maestros de la fe para sus hijos. Las clases de educación religiosa ayudan en esta responsabilidad parental. Sin embargo, unas pocas horas al año no son suficientes. Espero y confío en que los padres sean tan apasionados por su fe que compartan esta preocupación de que lo más precioso que pueden ofrecer a sus hijos es una fe fuerte y sólida bien informada.
Dediquen tiempo a repasar y repasar la última lección presentada en la clase de educación religiosa. Tal vez leen libros que tengan temas religiosos sobre los santos, la oración, los sacramentos al nivel del niño. Recen en casa. No hace falta decir que asistan a la misa dominical. Tengan algo de arte religioso en casa.
La educación religiosa es para algo más que prepararse para la Primera Comunión o la Confirmación, por muy importante que sea. Estos sacramentos no son un fin en sí mismos, sino pasos importantes en un camino de vida de fe. La educación religiosa debe continuar después de las celebraciones de estos sacramentos.
Tampoco se trata simplemente de eventos sociales o culturales. Recuerdo haber tenido una madre furiosa molesta porque se consideraba que su hijo aún no estaba lo suficientemente preparado para la Primera Comunión y tendría que posponerla hasta el próximo año. “Pero la fiesta ya está planeada”, se quejó. ¿Qué hay de malo en esa imagen?
Que sean bendecidos mientras viven esta maravillosa misión de guiar a su familia a Jesús y a Su Iglesia.
