Fr. Schuessler’s Reflection 9-1-24

There are many ways to reflect on Scripture. One way is to choose a passage from the Gospels. For “beginners” the Gospel according to St. Mark might be the easiest.

Begin by praying to the Holy Spirit. Read and re-read a passage. Try to picture the scene: the environment — trees —sky— ground, the weather, etc. etc. Ask yourself: Who is there? The apostles? Jesus? Mary? Scribes and Pharisees? People in general standing around? Maybe someone is

there with a donkey. You get the idea. Continue to picture the scene. Maybe you are kind of checking it all out from behind a tree. Use your imagination.

What are they doing? What are they saying? Who is speaking? Is Jesus teaching? Conversing with someone? Maybe He quietly looks up and sees you to include you in what He is saying and in what is going on. Again, use your imagination.

Finally, ask yourself what this personally means to you and calls you to in your life.

End with a paused reflective praying of the “Our Father” in thanksgiving for God’s grace.

(Always keeping in mind our Catholic use of Scripture.)
