Fr. Schuessler’s Reflection 8-11-24

As we have reflected, the Liturgy of the Word is the first part of Mass and, if you will, sets the scene for the second part of the Mass, the Eucharist. In the proclamation of the Word God speaks to His people, most especially in the Gospel which is the life and teaching of Jesus Himself. That is why we stand and on more solemn occasions the proclamation of the Gospel is accompanied with candles, a small procession and sometimes incense. Thís is also why it is proclaimed by a priest or deacon.

In our culture of quick 30 second visual glitzy ads, it is hard to listen to someone reading. Following in a Missal or other booklet or one of the books furnished in the pews helps. There can also be many distractions. We really must concentrate. It is more than “just something that is being read.”  It is the Holy Word of God that transforms us. It challenges and comforts us and calls us to conversion.

At the risk of getting on my soap box (again), I would urge moms and dads to walk the little ones out if they begin to fuss. The Word of God is sacred. It must be heard. We must create an atmosphere for that to happen. If a little one began to fuss at, say, the movies people would probably turn around and go SHHHHH. The ushers would tell you to leave and take you out. The Word of God merits the same respectful quiet. We count on parents to have the respect and consideration to take the little one out so the priest and congregation can concentrate. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is much more important than a movie.
