Dear Parishioners of St. James:
Praised be Jesus Christ!
No one is more humble than Jesus Christ. By becoming man, the Son of God lowered Himself in a manner incomprehensible. The eternal God Who dwells in inapproachable light condescended to be like us creatures out of sheer love. God’s humility should be the cause of our unending admiration and gratitude. But our Lord wanted to become even more humble for love of us.
In the Most Holy Eucharist, the Son of God has taken on the appearance of bread and wine. After the consecration during Holy Mass, the bread and wine become the Flesh and Blood of Jesus Christ. The appearances of bread and wine remain, but truly the Lord’s Body and Blood are present to be adored and consumed. What indescribable humility! God lowers Himself to a state even below our humanity. He becomes so vulnerable, so accessible as Food and Drink. Who could have imagined such humility?!
God’s humility in the Most Blessed Sacrament teaches us never to sin through pride. “Man judges by appearances but God looks into the heart” (1 Sam. 16:7). May the infinitely humble true presence of Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Eucharist inspire us to humble ourselves in the hope of exaltation with Him in heavenly glory.
God bless you,
Fr. Geary
