Dear Parishioners of St. James:
Praised be Jesus Christ!
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) highlights three fruits of Holy Communion. Remember, only a baptized Catholic in the state of grace (that is, not conscious of grave sin) may receive the Most Holy Eucharist. The reception of the Body and Blood of Jesus brings many fruits to the soul.
First, reception of the Most Blessed Sacrament affects an intimate union with Jesus Christ (CCC 1391). As Our Lord Himself said, “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him (Jn. 6: 56). We cannot get closer to God than in Holy Communion.
Second, Holy Communion separates us from sin by burning away venial sins and preserving us from mortal sins (CCC 1393). If you are struggling with bad habits because of your weakness, you need to receive the Most Holy Eucharist more frequently to inoculate yourself from sin and its disease.
Third, Holy Communion strengthens and increases our charity. Love either expands or shrinks; there is nothing neutral about love. Receiving the Most Blessed Sacrament in the state of grace increases our capacity to love God and our neighbor. If you want more love, then receive the very source of love.
May the Lord find faith in us. He has left the world His own flesh and blood in order for us to experience His love. Receive Him worthily so that His love in you may bear abundant fruit in time and in eternity.
God bless you,
Fr. Geary
