O Come Emmanuel! / ¡Ven, O Emanuel!
Today we begin the Advent season, a new season of hope. Each week of Advent is meant to symbolize 1000 years of waiting for the Messiah, the anointed one, our Savior. The prophet Jeremiah announces God’s plan to us: “… I will raise up for David a just shoot…” referring to Jesus Christ, His descendant. December is the darkest time of the year. The somber violet used in the vestments, the Advent candles and altar decorations remind us of the darkness that can invade our lives, the darkness of a world that lives without God. The gradual lighting of the candles of the Advent wreath week by week helps us remember that Christ is coming to dispel the darkness from our lives and bring us the light of His truth and His warmth. During Advent we recall the beginnings of salvation history, the people who waited for the first coming of the Lord. The Gospel also reminds us of the reality of His second coming. Christ exhorts us to be watchful and to pray for strength to withstand that day. Christ does not intend to frighten us, but to help us make level, straight, and smooth the path that leads to God.
Hoy comenzamos la temporada del Adviento, un tiempo de esperanza. Cada uno de sus cuatro semanas simboliza 1000 años en que el pueblo de Dios esperaba a su Mesías, su Salvación. El profeta Jeremías nos anuncia el designio de Dios Padre: “… haré nacer un nuevo brote de David…” es decir, Jesucristo, Hijo de David. Diciembre es el mes más oscuro del año. El color morado que utilizamos en la liturgia – los ornamentos del sacerdote, los cirios de la corona de Adviento – nos recuerdan de la oscuridad que puede invadir nuestras vidas – la oscuridad de un mundo que vive lejos de Dios. La gradual iluminación, semana a semana de la corona de Adviento nos recuerda que Cristo viene. La misma palabra significa “venir hacia” (Ad + venire). Cristo viene a disipar las tinieblas e impartir su luz y su calor. Recordamos los inicios de la historia de la salvación y el evangelio de hoy nos recuerda también de la realidad de susegunda venida al fin de los tiempos. Cristo nos exhorta a estar vigilando y a pedir la gracia de ser fuertes. No pretende espantarnos sino ayudarnos a preparar un camino llano y enderezadoque nos llevará a Dios.
