God Sees the Heart / Dios ve al corazón
Jesus contrasts two types of religiosity in today’s Gospel. The first is seen in the Scribes who use religion as a status symbol. They do many things for show but are really not very sincere in their piety. Jesus warns the crowds to be on their guard against such pretentious faith. He tells them that it will lead to their condemnation. The second is that of a poor widow who makes a contribution to the Temple of “two small coins” – sometimes referred to as the “widow´s mite”. This is such a small and insignificant token that few would see the value of it but for her it is very significant. It is everything she had. Jesus praises her and points her out as an example to His apostles. It´s not what people see that matters, it’s what God sees. Jesus invites His apostles to look inside themselves. It’s about our heart. If we want to be saved our actions need to reflect what is in our heart. In everything we do, especially in our religious practices, we need to be sincere and not try to deceive God. Jesus teaches us to serve God with a pure heart, an authentic faith and total trust. This poor woman is penniless. She is a widow without income or resources. Nevertheless, she trusts God, giving him everything she has, knowing that he will provide for her. Christ´s heart is moved when he sees faith carrying us that far because he knows that God is truly loved for who he is.
Jesús contrasta dos tipos de fe en el evangelio de hoy. El primero se ve en los escribas que utilizan la religión como medio para promover a sí mismos. Hacen muchas cosas para ser vistos, pero sin tener un corazón sincero. Jesús advierte a sus seguidores contra su fe pretenciosa. Les dice que conducirá a su condenación. El segundo tipo de fe se ve en la viuda que da dos moneditas al tesoro. Es un donativo tan pequeño y pobre que queda desapercibido, pero para ella, es algo muy significativo pues es todo lo que tiene. Jesús la alaba y señala su ejemplo. No es lo que la gente ve que importa sino lo que ve Dios. Jesús invita a sus apóstoles a ver dentro de sí, a ver cómo está su corazón. Si queremos alcanzar la vida con Él, nuestras acciones necesitan concordar con el corazón. En todo lo que hacemos – sobre todo en la práctica de nuestra fe – necesitamos ser sinceros y no tratar de engañar a Dios. Así Jesucristo nos enseña a servir a Dios con un corazón puro, con una fe auténtica y con total confianza. Esta viuda no tiene nada, ni siquiera una pensión. Sin embargo, confía en Dios, dándole todo lo que posee pues sabe que Dios proveerá. Cristo se conmueve cuando ve que la fe nos lleva lejos pues sabe que se trata de un amor auténtico a Dios.
