Whoever wishes to be great will be your servant / Quien quiera ser grande, que sea servidor
Jesus reacts energetically to the ambitions of His apostles who want the first place among their peers. He gives them a solemn lesson by proposing a new system of status: “anyone who wishes to be great among you will be your servant…” He asks them and us to serve our brothers and sisters to the point of giving our lives for them; by drinking the same chalice He drank to the last drop. This runs against the grain of our understanding of leadership completely in charge offering a new model of the leader who serves. He is telling us that from now on the leader will only have one function – that of service. We see this modeled perfectly in Jesus Christ Himself who came not to be served but to serve. And we see that on every page of the Gospel. He became our servant – we could even say our slave.
Jesucristo reacciona enérgicamente a las ambiciones de sus apóstoles que buscan el primer lugar sobre sus compañeros. Les da una lección importante proponiéndoles un nuevo sistema de estatus: “el que quiere ser grande entre ustedes, que sea su servidor…” Les pide a ellos y a nosotros que sirvamos a nuestros hermanos hasta entregar nuestra vida por ellos. Nos pide beber el mismo cáliz de sacrificio que Él bebió hasta la última gota. Así aprendemos la diferencia entre el líder que manda y aquel que sirve. Jesús nos enseña que de ahora en adelante el líder tendrá un solo modo de dirigir: el servir. Vemos el modelo más acabado del líder-sirviente en la persona de Jesucristo quien vino no para ser servido sino para servir. Vemos su ejemplo escrito en cada página del evangelio. Llegó a ser sirviente de nosotros todos, hasta podríamos decir “nuestro esclavo.”
