If Anyone Would be First, Let Him be the Servant of All / Quien quiere ser el primero que sea el siervo de todos.
In today’s Gospel Jesus finds His followers arguing among themselves about who is the greatest among them. Through baptism in Christ we have been inserted into the death and resurrection of the Lord who has made us a worthy sacrifice. The source of our Christian existence is then the same humility that our Lord lived. We are born to serve in and through Him who served everyone, even to the point of death. Humble service is therefore central to the life of a Christian, and all arguments or competitions to climb higher in importance are completely contrary to our faith. Whoever would be considered first would be the servant of his brother and sister like Jesus. So what makes us, His followers, worthy is the possibility He gives us to imitate the humility He shows us. All scandals will disappear in as much as we all learn to follow Christ along the path of humble service.
Hoy en el evangelio Jesucristo encuentra a los apóstoles discutiendo sobre quién de ellos sea el más importante. Gracias a nuestro bautismo en Cristo, hemos sido metidos dentro del misterio de su muerte y resurrección quien nos ha hecho dignos de su sacrificio. La fuente de nuestra existencia cristiana es la humildad que Jesús nos da como ejemplo en su vida. Hemos nacido para servir a nuestros hermanos en Cristo y con la ayuda de Él. El servicio humilde es así al centro de la vida de cada cristiano y todos las discusiones y competencias para subir en la estima de los demás son completamente contrarias a nuestra fe. Quien quiere ser considerado como el primero será siervo de sus hermanos como nos enseñó Jesucristo. Lo que nos hace dignos es la posibilidad que Él nos da de imitar la humildad que nos enseña. Todos los escándalos comienzan a desvanecer en cuanto nosotros todos aprendamos a seguirle a Cristo por el camino del servicio humilde.
