Whoever eats this bread will never die
There can be no life without nourishment. The food that we eat comes from something already alive – either animal or vegetable. It was alive and is given to us for our life. In today’s
Gospel Jesus shows us that in order to have eternal life we must nourish ourselves from His life. When we eat His flesh and drink His blood we are spiritually nourished with His life, just as the body is nourished with human food. This new spiritual food has an immediate effect on the believer in that it gives us eternal life. And through this food Jesus promises us that our life will never end. When we eat the food of this world, we become one with the biological cycle of life. But when we eat the spiritual food, we receive divine life and we are initiated into the life of God. Through the reception of His body and blood, we are incorporated into Jesus.
