Tb 11:5-17; Ps 146: 1b-2, 6c-10; Mk 12:35-37
As we near the end of the book of Tobit, we find out the angel Raphael convinces Tobiah to bring back the “medicines” of the fish. Using them, Tobit’s sight was restored and Tobit praises God for all that was done for him. There is more to this story to hear, and tomorrow we will hear part of Tobit’s great song of praise in Chapter 13. When God is present in our lives, and we allow him to be with us, how can we not sing a song of praise? Tobit went through many trials, including being blinded for a while, but Tobit was true to his faith in God. The angel Raphael came into Tobit’s son’s life, and ultimately Tobit’s himself, to deliver them and remind them of the faithfulness of God. Once Tobit realized all that God had given him, he sang a song of praise and gave an exhortation to Jerusalem to turn back on its ways. As Tobit recognized God’s work in his life, Tobit felt he was able to die in peace.
Where are we with our adversary in life? Are we staying downtrodden and woeful, or are we turning to God, praising Him for everything we have in life? Knowing that God is so merciful and loving that He will take care of us? We can learn a lot from stories like that of Tobit. When our life is about to pass us, we need to live like Tobit did and praise God for everything we have, and everything God has done for us. Today’s Psalm declares: “Praise the Lord, O my soul; I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to God while I live.” That single line of praise is a great place to start.
Jesus reminds us again in the Gospel who He is by responding to a trick question by His enemies. From David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, Jesus says. There is no mistake, Jesus is both Son of God, and the Son of Man. He is the Lord and the Savior of all. We have heard a lot lately about the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and we have also heard a lot about how we were made to give God praise for all. Find Chapter 13 of Tobit and read it. Then be like Tobit, raise your arms in praise, open your mouth, and praise the one who made us. Amen, Amen. Alleluia!
